Reports directly to Victorian Campaigns Manager.

The Position:

The Victorian Community Campaigner will play a key role in The Wilderness Society’s conservation campaigns to protect Australia’s great wild places.

Many of Australia’s great conservation gains have come about through the tireless efforts of ordinary members of the community – people from all walks of life who, in their tens of thousands, have volunteered their time to ensure the survival of our natural heritage.

As Australia’s largest community based conservation non-government organisation, The Wilderness Society strives to provide the resources, space and motivation for members of the community to work together to contribute positively to some of our greatest conservation challenges.

The primary responsibility of this position will be to promote and coordinate community involvement in The Wilderness Society’s conservation campaigns throughout Victoria.

The two key campaigns are;

1. Victorian Forest Campaign - This campaign aims to protect eastern Victoria’s old growth forests, water catchments and endangered species habitat, and facilitate a transition of commodity production (woodchipping and other low value products) from native forests into plantations. Particular emphasis is placed on ensuring forest protection is a key pillar in state and national climate change mitigation programs. The campaign is based on the WildCountry approach to landscape scale conservation. The next few years will involve an increase in community outreach around the importance of forest protection to reduce climate change.

2. Victorian WildCountry Campaign – Commencing from 2008, this new campaign aims to take our experience in landscape scale conservation science and practice in Victoria and around the country and apply it at a statewide government policy level. This will involve a new program of community engagement and awareness as part of the urgent need to identify, protect, reconnect and rehabilitate Victoria’s ecosyetems.

The implementation of the WildCountry program for Victoria will take place under the guises;

In respect to the Victorian Community Campaigner position, this will involve implementing strategies to raise environmental awareness amongst the public, organising events, to promote involvement in conservation activities, community outreach and education, and coordinating a diverse and large number of conservation volunteers to bring about good conservation outcomes.

During key periods, the position will also be required to focus on national thematic campaigns which require the involvement of Campaign Centre’s across the country.

The position will be based at the Melbourne Campaign Centre but regularly undertake activities in different locations throughout Melbourne and on occasion, elsewhere in the state. The successful applicant will need to provide their own transport between metropolitan locations.

The position will work in close collaboration with the Victorian Campaigns Manager, the Campaign Centre Coordinator and campaign staff.

Primary tasks and responsibilities:

  1. Work as part of the TWS Campaign Team to develop strategies and activities for conservation campaigns which contribute to the WildCountry vision.
  2.

  3. Engage regularly and effectively with the wider community through a program of public information stalls and displays, presentations, schools education opportunities, forums and the wide distribution of campaign materials such as brochures and stickers.
  4.

  5. To induct, recruit, coordinate, motivate and value our volunteer supporters and campaigners, while ensuring that volunteer effort in the Campaign Centre is respectful of the need to maintain as quiet, clean and orderly office environment as possible.
  6.

  7. To assist in organising, marketing and presenting campaign activities and events such as eco-tours, rallies, public meetings, and peaceful direct actions.
  8.

  9. To develop, maintain and support a network of contacts with a wide and diverse variety of community organisations, individuals and supporters.
  10.

  11. Assist in the development of communications materials such as brochures and stickers in advocating for conservation.
  12.

  13. Promote and coordinate the Melbourne Campaign Centre’s weekly volunteer meetings – the Wilderness Action Group.
  14.

  15. Provide support for The Wilderness Society’s fundraising activities by identifying and developing funding opportunities, and fund raising events in particular, and encouraging membership at stalls, events and amongst volunteers.
  16.

  17. Maintain a good working knowledge of conservation issues in State and National thematic campaigns involving the MCC.
  18.

  19. Assist the campaign staff and Campaign Centre Coordinator with day to day duties in the office such as responding to requests for information and database maintenance.
  20.

  21. Participate in the Community Campaigner’s Forum (CCF) to share expertise and training in campaigns and volunteer engagement, and the production of induction and other materials that require consistency across all TWS Campaign Centre’s.
