Timber company to shut down

Posted Wed Oct 31, 2007 10:00am AEDT

ABC News On-line

A central Victorian timber company will close after more than 30 years of operation.

Black Forest Timbers (BFT) at Woodend opened in 1974.

But the company has been battling to keep its doors open since the State Government introduced an auctioning system for timber supplies.

BFT says it has been unsuccessful in getting a reliable supply of hardwood timber through the process.

Fourteen people lost their jobs when the sawmill closed in April.

The company's dry mill has been shaping timber components for the furniture and joinery industry.

It will close it's doors in January, with 10 losing their jobs.

BFT's general manager Diane Tregoning says the small business has been unable to compete against big companies for the state's hardwood supplies.
